Stick and MIG welders do the same basic job, but they suit different work and different sites. This guide covers which one to rent for your job and when you need an engine-driven welder.
Stick welding (SMAW)
Stick welding uses a coated electrode rod. It works outdoors, in wind and on rusty or dirty steel, and the equipment is simple. It is common in structural, repair and fabrication work. Our Thunderbolt 160 DC stick welder plugs into 120 V or 240 V power.
MIG welding (GMAW)
MIG uses a wire fed through a gun, usually with shielding gas. It is faster on clean metal and easier to learn, but shielding gas is blown away by wind, so it suits indoor shop work better. Call us if you need wire-feed equipment.
Engine-driven welder and generator
When the site has no power, an engine-driven welder makes its own. The Miller Blue Star 185 welds from 60 to 195 A and also supplies 6,200 W of generator power for grinders and lights. The Bobcat 250 diesel is a larger engine-driven unit.
| Stick | MIG | Engine-driven | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Outdoor repairs, structural, rusty steel | Clean metal, sheet and light fabrication | Sites with no power |
| Wind | Handles it | Gas shield blows away | Same as the process you run |
| Power | 120 or 240 V outlet | Outlet | Makes its own |

How to choose
- If there is outlet power and you are welding steel outdoors or on rough material, rent a stick welder.
- If there is no power, or you also need power for tools, rent an engine-driven welder and generator.
- Thicker steel needs more amperage. Tell us the material thickness and rod size.
- Engine-driven units need open air. Never run one indoors or in a closed space.
Safety
Wear a welding helmet, gloves and flame-resistant clothing, keep a fire extinguisher close and clear flammable material from the work area. Ventilate fumes. Never weld on a container that held fuel or chemicals.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run a welder off a generator?
Yes, if the generator is large enough for the welder input rating. Or rent an engine-driven welder that makes its own power.
Do you rent welding helmets and rods?
Tell us the job and we will help with leads and rods. See our safety equipment category for protective gear.
Which is easier for a beginner?
MIG is usually easier to learn on clean metal. Stick is more forgiving outdoors and on dirty steel.
Can I rent a welder for a day?
Yes, daily, weekly and monthly. Call 718-344-1474 for availability.
