Reach is a rough guide: for an A-frame, about 4 ft above the ladder height, standing no higher than the second step from the top; for an extension ladder, the top point it can safely rest on with the sections overlapped and set at a safe angle.

Which ladder do I need?

  • Interior work: an A-frame ladder tall enough that you never stand on the top two steps. The 12 ft and 14 ft A-frames are fiberglass, so they are safe to use near electrical work.
  • 12 ft or 14 ft A-frame: choose the 12 ft for ceilings up to about 16 ft and the 14 ft for ceilings up to about 18 ft.
  • Exterior work: an extension ladder set at a safe angle against a firm surface. The 28 ft suits most two-story homes and gutters; go to 32 ft or 40 ft for taller walls.
  • Higher access: a scissor lift or boom lift, which is safer for long work at height.

Ladder rental FAQ

What height can I reach with each A-frame ladder?

As a rule of thumb, add about 4 ft to the ladder size: a 6 ft reaches about 10 ft, an 8 ft about 12 ft, a 12 ft about 16 ft and a 14 ft about 18 ft, without standing on the top two steps.

Should I rent a 12 ft or a 14 ft A-frame ladder?

Rent the 12 ft for ceilings up to about 16 ft. It is lighter and easier to move through doorways and stairwells. Choose the 14 ft for ceilings up to about 18 ft, such as lobbies and storefronts.

Should I rent a 28 ft or a 32 ft extension ladder?

A 28 ft extension ladder reaches about 25 ft, which covers most two-story homes, gutters and rooflines. For taller second-story walls, choose the 32 ft, which reaches about 29 ft.

How tall an extension ladder do I need?

The ladder must extend about 3 ft above the landing and sit at a safe angle, so choose one a few feet longer than the height you need to reach.

Can I use an A-frame ladder as a straight ladder?

No. Use an A-frame fully opened with the spreaders locked.

Do you deliver ladders?
