Which generator do I need?
- Add up the running watts of everything you will run at once. The tool label lists it as watts or as volts times amps.
- Allow for starting surge. Motors, compressors and saws can draw two to three times their running load for a moment. Pick a generator with headroom.
- Check the voltage. Larger tools need 240 V. The 7,500 W, 7,300 W and 14,000 W units provide both 120 and 240 V.
- Inverter or conventional: inverter models are quieter and give clean power for electronics. Conventional models are better for heavy tools.
- Run time: a larger fuel tank runs longer between fill-ups. The 6,000 and 7,500 W units have 7.3 gal tanks.
