Which generator do I need?
- Add up the running watts of everything you will run at once. The tool label lists it as watts or as volts times amps.
- Allow for starting surge. Motors, compressors and saws can draw two to three times their running load for a moment. Pick a generator with headroom.
- Check the voltage. Larger tools need 240 V. The 7,500 W, 7,300 W and 14,000 W units provide both 120 and 240 V. The 38 and 45 kVA diesels provide 3-phase power from 208 to 480 V.
- Inverter or conventional: inverter models are quieter and give clean power for electronics. Conventional models are better for heavy tools.
- Run time: a larger fuel tank runs longer between fill-ups. The 6,000 and 7,500 W units have 7.3 gal tanks.

Generator safety in NYC
Run generators outdoors in open air, well away from windows, doors and air intakes. Exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which is deadly, so never run one in a garage, basement or enclosed space. Keep fuel away from the hot engine and refuel only when it is off and cool.

What size generator do I need for a job site?
Add up the running watts of the tools you use at the same time and add 25% for headroom and starting surge. Check each tool label, or have your electrician size it for the full load.
Can I run a generator indoors?
No. Run it outdoors with plenty of ventilation. Carbon monoxide from the exhaust can kill within minutes in an enclosed space.
What is an inverter generator?
An inverter generator produces clean, stable power and runs quieter. It suits electronics, lights and lighter tools.
How long does it run on one tank?
It depends on the load. The 6,000 and 7,500 W units have 7.3 gal tanks. At full load the 45 kVA runs about 29 hours on its 79 gal tank and the 38 kVA about 40 hours on its 106 gal tank.
What is the difference between the 38 kVA and 45 kVA generators?
The 45 kVA MQ Power Whisperwatt gives 36 kW prime power with 3-phase and 120/240 V single-phase at the same time, and runs at 58 dB(A). The 38 kVA Airman gives 30.4 kW prime power, switches between 208, 240, 416 and 480 V 3-phase or 120, 240 and 277 V single-phase, and has a larger 106 gal tank for about 40 hours at full load. Both are diesel with built-in spill containment.
Can a generator power a building?
The 38 and 45 kVA units are used for temporary building power. A licensed electrician must connect them through an approved transfer switch. Never backfeed a building's wiring.
