Which boom lift do I need?

  • Boom or scissor? A scissor lift goes straight up and gives a large platform. Choose a boom when you need to reach out or over something: a roof edge, a facade, equipment, a loading dock or scaffolding. If you only need height over a clear floor, see our scissor lifts.
  • Indoors or outdoors: the electric 40 and 45 ft booms are quiet and have no exhaust, so they suit interiors, atriums and finished floors. The diesel booms have rough terrain drive for yards, lots and uneven ground.
  • Reach, not just height: pick the model from the outreach and up-and-over clearance you need, not only the platform height. A boom needs room to swing, so mark out the whole working envelope.
  • Access and delivery: the 80 ft boom is about 8 ft 2 in wide and about 36,000 lb; the 125 ft boom is about 44,000 lb. Large booms arrive on a trailer, so tell us about overhead wires, street width and ground conditions at the site.

OSHA requires fall protection for workers in a boom platform. We can add a safety harness to your rental.

Not sure which one to rent? Tell us the work height, the access (door width, elevator, stairs) and the surface, and we will match a machine. Call 718-344-1474 or request a quote.

Renting a boom lift in NYC

We rent by the day, week or month and deliver to Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. We explain the controls, outriggers or axle extension, and the basic safety checks when the machine is delivered or picked up. Operators must be trained on the specific type of lift; see OSHA's guidance on aerial lifts.

Boom lift rental FAQs

What is the difference between a boom lift and a scissor lift?

A scissor lift raises straight up on a large platform. A boom lift has an arm that can reach up, out and over obstacles, with a smaller basket. Use a boom when the work is not directly above a clear spot.

What does up-and-over clearance mean?

It is the height of the obstacle the boom can reach over while still placing the basket on the other side. It matters for roof edges, railings and equipment.

Can a boom lift work indoors?

Yes, the electric 40 and 45 ft booms are made for indoor and finished-floor work. Check door and ceiling clearances and floor capacity first. Diesel booms are for outdoor use.

Do I need a harness in a boom lift?

Yes. OSHA requires workers in boom platforms to use fall protection attached to the basket. Ask us to add a harness to the rental.

How big a boom do I need for a four-story building?

A four-story facade is roughly 40 to 50 ft. A 60 ft articulating boom gives margin for reach. Call us with the building height and the space for the machine and we will recommend a model.

Do you deliver booms to every borough?

Yes. We deliver to all five NYC boroughs. Tell us about overhead wires and street access when you book.
