Which grits do I need?

  • Old finish, deep scratches or uneven boards: start with 36 or 40 grit.
  • Smoothing: move up to 60, then 80 grit.
  • Final pass before stain or finish: finish with 100 or 120 grit.
  • Do not skip grits. Each grit removes the scratches from the one before it.
  • Use the same grit on the edger as on the drum sander at each stage.

What grit should I start with?

How many belts do I need?

Plan on several belts for a room, and more for heavy finish. Tell us the room size and condition and we will help estimate.

Do I need an edger too?

Yes. The drum sander cannot reach the edges and corners, so you need an edger.
