Which compactor do I need?

  • Pavers, walkways and patios: a plate compactor in the 180 to 210 lb range, with a paver pad if you are working on finished pavers.
  • Gravel base and driveways: a 200 lb class plate, compacting in layers of about 4 to 6 in.
  • Trenches and narrow spots: a jumping jack tamper, which compacts cohesive soil in narrow areas.
  • Asphalt patches: a plate with a water system, so the asphalt does not stick to the plate.
  • Granular or cohesive soil: plates work best on granular soil like sand and gravel; tampers suit clay and cohesive soil.
