Water pumps compared

Submersible pumps sit in the water and run on 110 V power. Semi-trash and full trash pumps sit beside the water and run on a Honda gas engine. Full trash pumps pass bigger stones and debris. Figures come from the manufacturer; tap a pump for details.

Which pump do I need?

  • Flooded basement or elevator pit: a 2 in submersible pump, which needs only a 110 V outlet and a hose.
  • Last inch of water on a floor: the finishing pump, which pumps water down to a very thin film.
  • Mud, silt or small debris: a trash pump or semi-trash pump, which handles solids a clean-water pump would clog on.
  • Excavations and sites without power: a gas semi-trash pump; use it outdoors only.
  • Stones, gravel and heavy debris: a full trash pump, the KTH-50X or KTH-80S. A semi-trash pump only passes small solids, about 1/3 in.
  • Bigger volume: a 3 in pump moves more water than the 2 in models. The KTH-80S moves the most, up to 383 GPM.

Water pump rental FAQs

What is the difference between a trash pump and a clean-water pump?

A trash or semi-trash pump has a larger impeller opening, so it passes mud, silt and small solids that would clog a clean-water pump.

Can a submersible pump drain a flooded basement?

Yes. Place it at the lowest point, run the discharge hose to a drain, and plug it into a 110 V outlet with a GFCI.

PS-65011CR or PKS-65011CR submersible?

Both are 2 in, 110 V Koshin pumps. The PKS-65011CR is the trash version: it passes small solids and moves a little more water, up to about 4,750 GPH. Use the PS-65011CR for cleaner water, up to about 4,430 GPH.

Semi-trash or full trash pump?

Both run on a Honda gas engine. A semi-trash pump (STH) is lighter and handles water with sand and small solids up to about 8 to 9 mm. A full trash pump (KTH) has a bigger, tougher impeller and passes stones and debris up to 20 mm on the KTH-50X and 27 mm on the KTH-80S, so it clogs less on a muddy site. It is heavier and uses more fuel.

KTH-50X or KTH-80S trash pump?

The KTH-50X is a 2 in pump that moves up to 185 GPM and weighs about 104 lb. The KTH-80S is a 3 in pump that moves up to 383 GPM, about twice as much, passes larger solids and weighs about 143 lb. Choose the KTH-80S for large excavations and the KTH-50X for smaller pits and trenches.

Do you supply hose?

Ask when you reserve. Tell us the length you need to reach the drain.

Do you deliver pumps?

Yes, to all five NYC boroughs.
